What is a good age to get started?
Any age! We start students as early as 4. The average age of our beginners is from 4-8 years old. As Bill Starr says “You’re rarely too young and never too old to Twinkle”.
What costs should I consider?
Fees are charged by the term (Fall and Winter) and include private and group lessons-cost is roughly $700 per term. There is an additional annual membership fee to the school payable in September. Instruments may be rented through local music stores, or purchased second hand from other Canta Arya families. Your teacher will help with procuring an instrument of the correct size and any additional materials such as sheet music.
What is the time commitment, both for me and my child?
One weekly lesson, plus one group class per week (September to the end of May). Additionally, daily home practice is a must! Daily practice is a crucial element to achieve success. The youngest students need the most help from parents. Older students are independent.
What are the performance opportunities?
Every year there are two solo recitals, and two group concerts, plus additional opportunities to perform out in the community, Kiwanis Music Festival and for our collaborative partnership with Providence Manor. Learn more about performing with Canta Arya Strings.
Do parents need musical training?
Absolutely not! The only thing we require is enthusiasm and commitment to supporting your child’s education.
At what age or level do kids graduate from your school?
Students typically stay with the school until they graduate from high school.
What’s the difference between Suzuki and the Royal Conservatory of Music?
There are several, but the two most obvious are that Suzuki students initially learn by ear, thus allowing for a much earlier start than traditional programs where children are expected to read music from the beginning. The other big difference is the weekly group classes all students receive, which means they are part of a community. Music is not a ‘solitary sport’.
